THE PHILADELPHIA DISTANCE RUN/ROCK 'N' ROLL PHILADELPHIA HALF MARATHON HISTORY & CHAMPIONS LIST
The Philadelphia Distance Run was started in 1978 in the era of the "running boom" by a private group of Philadelphia runners. Mark Stewart served as the long term race director and with a local board of directors, grew the Philadelphia Distance Run to one of the most successful half marathons in the world. The course was extremely fast starting at 18th and Market St, covering a route that included the streets of center city, west on Chestnut St to the Univ of Penn area, and circling the West and East River Drives and finishing on the Ben Franklin Parkway by the Peter and Paul Cathedral. The fast course along with the elite field was responsible for a number of world record times set on the 13.1 mile course. The race quickly became a local running and international runner favorite and attraction for the elite. Elite runners who came to Philadelphia to run the course over the years were Lasse Viren (4x gold medal winner), Rod Dixon, Mike Musyoki, Joan Benoit, Deena Kastor, Ryan Hall. 1984 Olympic Gold Medalist, Joan Benoit set the world record 2x on the course, and the 1984 American record of 1:08:34 stood for 20 years before Deena Kastor broke it in the PDR in 2005. Mike Musyoki set the men's world record on the course in 1982, which was broken by Mark Curp on the same course in 1985. Other notables who have run the course was Khalid Khannouchi (3x winner) who ran a world best marathon time in the Chicago Marathon. The most dominant championof the PDR was Katherine Ndereba from Kenya. Ndereba lived and trained locally in the hills of Valley Forge Park and won the PDR 7xs. She was one of the greatest runners in history, winning the marathon 2x at the World Championships, 2 silver medals in the Olympics, as well as 4x winner of the Boston Marathon and setting a world record for the marathon in Chicago. Most recenty in 2017, one of the top distance runners in USA history, Galen Rupp (Silver and Bronze medal winner in the Olympics) won the race. The current course records set in 2011 (Matt Kisorio and Kim Smith) are still recorded as the fastest times for a half marathon on American soil.
The race is traditionally held on the 3rd Sunday of September. The race ownership and name change occured in 2009 with the name of the race changed to the Rock 'N' Roll Philadelphia Half Marathon. The race entries are generally around 12,000 runners as it approaches it's 50 year anniversary in 2018. A local Philadelphia group took over ownership from Rock N Roll in
2021.
